KR Reclaims Iceland’s Basketball Championship Title

By Iceland Review

Reykjavík sports club KR won the Icelandic Championship title in men’s basketball with an 84-83 victory over Grindavík in a thrilling final in KR’s home ground in Frostaskjól yesterday. KR defended its title from 2007.

“This Icelandic Championship title is a bit sweeter than in 2007,” KR’s coach Benedikt Gudmundsson told Morgunbladid. “It feels as if this were my final project since I started coaching most of these boys in 1992. I’m incredibly proud of this team and it was a fantastic final.”

Gudmundsson said he believes now is the time to allow a new coach to take over, adding, “I haven’t discussed it formally with the board yet. […] I have coached many of these boys since they were small and they could use a new and fresh voice to guide them in the coming years.”

KR’s captain Fannar Ólafsson said yesterday’s victory couldn’t have been achieved without Gudmundsson’s and his co-trainer Ingi Thór Steinthórsson’s efforts. They achieved a near miracle by turning things around after KR suffered a devastating loss against Grindavík in their third game.

“We went through a great program with the coaches after that game and there is no doubt in my mind that it changed everything for our team in the following games,” Ólafsson said. “I’d like to use this opportunity to thank Grindavík for a fantastic final.”
