Kirkjufjara Beach Closed

The Environment Agency of Iceland has decided to close Kirkjufjara beach, South Iceland, to all travelers, following yesterday’s accident, when a German woman lost her life after being caught by a wave. The agency cites the dangerous serf and the risk of landslides as reasons for the closure, RÚV reports.

A temporary sign announcing the closure has been put up and a permanent one will be installed next week. It’s not clear for how long the beach will remain closed.

Hákon Ásgeirsson, specialist at the Environment Agency, stated there is need for year-round monitoring on the beach, so that conditions can be evaluated at any given time and the beach closed when need be. In the meantime, the best option is to keep the beach closed.
