A key player on the Icelandic men’s national handball team will not be able to participate at the 2017 World Men’s Handball Championship in France, which begins today, RÚV reports.
Aron Pálmarsson in on his way home from France, due to injury. He has been battling a hip injury for some time and was unable to take part in the team’s practice games in Denmark last weekend.
Following a practice with the team yesterday, he underwent medical examination by the team’s doctors, after which it was determined he’d be unable to compete.
His absence is a shock for the Icelandic team, because he is one of the world’s best handball players. Luckily, Coach Geir Sveinsson and his assistant coaches have had plenty of time to prepare for this situation. Aron has next to never been able to take part in the preparation for the championship, and others have had to fill his shoes. Those same players must now replace him in France.
Iceland’s first game is against Spain in Mets tomorrow night at 8:45 local time.
The Icelandic men’s national handball team won the Olympic silver in 2008 and the bronze at the Euro in 2010.
