Keflavík Knocks ÍR out of Iceland’s Basketball League

Basketball team Keflavík from the victorious Sudurnes region beat surprisingly strong newcomer ÍR from Reykjavík 93-73 yesterday after having lost the first two games against ÍR. Keflavík will thus play against Snaefell from west Iceland in the finals.

Since the Icelandic Basketball League was established in this form in 1984, a team from Sudurnes has always been in the finals.

“I’m really satisfied with qualifying for the finals because it is a great achievement to beat this fantastic ÍR team,” Keflavík’s coach Sigurdur Ingimundarson told Morgunbladid.

ÍR won its first two games against Keflavík, but then Keflavík retaliated by winning the third game in the best of three series.

“We have a lot of experience so I can’t say I was especially depressed after the first two games because we know that three victories [against the same team] are required,” Ingimundarson added.

The first game between Keflavík and Snaefell takes place on Saturday.
