With its 97-79 victory over ÍR in the Iceland Express league yesterday, Keflavík is still in the running for the Iceland cup despite having lost the first two games with ÍR. Keflavík is the first team in Iceland’s basketball history to even the scores in the semifinals in this way.
Keflavík and ÍR will play for the fourth time on Wednesday and the winner will play for the Icelandic championship, Morgunbladid reports.
Since the championship first took place in this form in 1984, Keflavík has won the title many times, but ÍR is a newcomer. ÍR was, however, considered one of the strongest basketball teams in Iceland 30 to 40 years ago.
Iceland’s strongest teams today are in the Sudurnes region, where Keflavík is located. Since 1984 the Icelandic championship title has in fact only four times been earned from a team from outside that region.
Tonight Snaefell and Grindavík, also from Sudurnes, will play in the other semifinals. Snaefell is leading and if they win, and ÍR beats Keflavík, it will be in the first time in modern Icelandic basketball history that the Sudurnes teams are excluded from the finals.
