The introduction of Icelandic as the main language on all directional signs at Keflavík Airport has been postponed to spring 2026, according to airport operator Isavia.
Initially announced on Icelandic Language Day, 16 November 2023, the project initially aimed for completion by the end of 2024. However, it has been reported that Isavia failed to meet their initial deadline due to unforeseen circumstances, as made clear in an article published by mbl.is.
Those behind the project are aware of the delays, but have attempted to ease concerns. “This project is in full swing,” said Guðjón Helgason, Isavia’s information officer, in a written statement. “It has taken longer than we expected as the scope is considerably greater than anticipated.”

The redesign is currently in the planning phase. Signs were first tested at the airport during autumn 2024, with further testing scheduled across more areas this year.
“The goal is for the project to be completed by spring 2026,” Guðjón confirmed. “There are also more projects underway to improve the airport that are further along in the construction schedule.”
The reason behind updating the language at the airport is to promote Iceland’s linguistic heritage, as part of broader development efforts at Keflavík Airport aimed at enhancing the passenger experience.
