“Keflavík Airport safe,” says airport director

Jón Bödvarsson, Director of Keflavík Airport, says that it is not true that security at the airport is in serious disarray as the Keflavík Airport chapter of the National Firefighter Association claimed in an announcement yesterday. The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service, RÚV, quotes Jón saying that international safety standards are fulfilled.

According to RÚV, firefighters are not the only ones to worry about safety measures at the airport; several pilots have also voiced their concerns to the Icelandic Professional Pilots Safety Committee. The pilots say that because of layoffs the manpower in de-icing and in the firefighter squad is barely adequate. RÚV reports that Bödvarsson was unaware of the pilot’s complaints and said he has neither received a formal letter nor informal complaint, neither from the firefighters nor the pilots.
