An Icelandic kayaker had come close to exhaustion when he was saved by a man on a small boat yesterday evening. His kayak had overturned while paddling with two others off Munaðarnes in Árneshreppur, the West Fjords.
The three men had headed out in fine weather but when the wind picked up locals started to worry. Birgir Guðmundsson decided to go look for them on his boat. All of the kayaks had overturned but two of the kayakers had made it to land.
Birgir came to the third kayaker’s assistance at the eleventh hour. The man was in the water, hanging onto the kayak. “He had become very cold and was absolutely exhausted,” he told mbl.is.
Birgir hauled the man into his boat and brought him to shore where search and rescue were waiting. “After he had warmed up he said he was all right.”
In other news, a foreign tourist was hit by a car when cycling near Lake Mývatn in Northeast Iceland yesterday evening. The woman was taken to a hospital but her injuries were considered to be minor, mbl.is reports.
