An earthquake of magnitude 4.3 hit Katla volcano at 3:15 pm yesterday, RÚV reports. It was felt in Vík í Mýrdal and in Reynishverfi. Two large aftershocks followed the next couple of minutes, one of them measuring 3, the other one 2.9. The Icelandic Met Office reports there is no sign of volcanic activity.
Gunnar Guðmundsson, specialist at the Icelandic Met Office, stated, “The source [of the earthquake] is in the center of the caldera, towards the west.” He added that the area is always being watched. “It’s constantly being monitored and its activity watched.”
