Josh Groban’s Songwriter Accused of Plagiarism

Icelandic musician Jóhann Helgason has taken legal action because of alleged plagiarism of one of Josh Groban’s songwriters. Helgason argues that Groban’s song, “You Raise Me Up” is almost identical to a popular song he wrote in the 1970s .

The Norwegian songwriter who composed Groban’s song is known to have lived in Iceland and worked with Icelandic musicians, during which time he might have heard Helgason’s song, according to national radio RUV. A thorough comparison between the two songs by Helgason yielded the result that they were “97 percent identical”.

Based on these findings, a British law firm has begun legal proceedings on behalf of Helgason. “You Raise Me Up” has hit the charts worldwide so considerable financial interests are at stake for Helgason.
