Jón Gnarr Popular Choice for President

Most poll respondents say they would like to see Jón Gnarr become President of Iceland. Comedian and writer Jón is currently domestic content editor for 365 Media, and used to be mayor of Reykjavík.

Gallup recently conducted a poll asking people who they would like to be the next president. In second place after Jón Gnarr, with 17 percent of responses, was Katrín Jakobsdóttir. Katrín is the current leader of the Left Green Movement.

11 percent of respondents said they would like incumbent Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson to sit for a sixth consecutive term, until 2020, when he will be 77-years-old.

Eight percent named Þóra Arnórsdóttir, six percent Ragna Árnadóttir, three percent Davíð Oddsson, and two percent each for Þórarinn Eldjárn and Kristín Ingólfsdóttir.

28 percent named somebody else and three percent said they just wanted a female president, without naming a name.

Overall, six-in-ten Icelanders have not properly made up their minds yet about the next president, one year before the election expected in summer 2016.

Though his name came up almost twice as often as Katrín’s, Jón Gnarr already said this March that he is not interested in becoming president, Vísir reports.

Katrín Jakobsdóttir has told reporters that she has difficulty seeing herself in the role of President of the Republic, and Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson says he has not yet made up his mind whether or not he would like to continue into a record-breaking sixth term in office. His fifth term is already more than any other president before him.

The doors to Bessastaðir seem to be wide open.
