Jóhann Jóhannsson’s “Parting Gift” to Be Released in March

Deutsche Grammophon will release an album of Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson’s music completed shortly before his death. The album, titled “Englabörn & Variations” is to be released on March 23rd. RÚV reported first.

Jóhann Jóhannsson was found dead in his Berlin apartment on February 9th, only 48 years old. The cause of his death is unknown.

The release was announced on the artist’s Facebook page yesterday. The post describes the album as “seeming like a parting gift,” where “Jóhann reinterpreted pieces off his 2002 debut album ‘Englabörn’ and invited other artists he admired to do the same.” The album is released with the support of Jóhann’s family.

Jóhann is known for scoring the films Arrival and Sicario, and his score for The Theory of Everything received the Golden Globe award in 2014.
