Jimmy Fallon Joins Iceland Name Debate

U.S. television host Jimmy Fallon of NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon joked about the obscurities of the legal struggle of Blær Bjarkardóttir to have her name approved by Icelandic authorities. Officially, she is only known as stúlka, or ‘girl.’

As Blær, which means ‘light breeze,’ is classified as a men’s name by the Icelandic Naming Committee, it is illegal for a female to carry it.

On his show, Fallon commented: “Right, Light Breeze is a ridiculous name for an Icelandic woman, said Bjork.” It was included in a string of jokes, at the cost of director George Lucas and rapper Lil Wayne, among others.
