Javelin Thrower to Carry Icelandic Flag at Olympics

Javelin thrower Ásdís Hjálmsdóttir will carry the Icelandic flag at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in London tonight. Ásdís said she appreciates the honor, although she is more excited about the competition itself.

Ásdís will be the second woman in Iceland’s sporting history to be granted the honor at the Summer Olympics; Guðrún Arnardóttir carried the Icelandic flag at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, ruv.is reports.

Twenty-seven athletes will represent Iceland at the London Olympics, 14 of whom are on the national team in men’s handball.

The greatest Icelandic Olympic achievement to date was when the handball team won the silver in Beijing in 2008.
