Jamie Oliver’s Sweet Idea for Hallgrímskirkja

Wondering what’s cooking in Hallgrímskirkja church, downtown Reykjavik? Its late architect might turn over in his grave if he knew that a famous visitor just wrote, “Very Cool church design in Iceland – be cool with a bakery at the bottom.”

The message was written on Instagram yesterday by the British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, who has been in Iceland in recent days, along with his wife Jools, Vísir reports.

The Church of Hallgrímur, or Hallgrímskirkja, is dedicated to Iceland’s best known religious poet, Hallgrímur Pétursson. It was designed by the state architect, Guðjón Samúelsson. The church took 41 years to complete. Construction began in 1945 and was completed 1986.
