Jack Nicholson Expresses Interest in Volcano

Representatives of US actor Jack Nicholson have requested a copy of Icelandic director Rúnar Rúnarsson’s feature film Volcano (Eldfjall), possibly with an English-language remake in mind.

Informal discussions have taken place with the film’s producer in Iceland, ZikZak. “They have contacted us and a review copy is on its way. I can’t say anything else but it is not a far-out idea,” the film’s producer Þórir Snær Sigurjónsson told Fréttablaðið, referring to the possibility of Nicholson starring in a remake of the film.

Nicholson is among Þórir’s favorite actors and he stated Nicholson would surely win the Oscar for the fourth time if the remake would happen.

“It is still at a level of discussion but it would be great if it could happen. He, of course, has his own team who are responsible for finding interesting projects for him,” Þórir said.

Volcano has achieved remarkable success at film festivals in the past months, most recently earning the Krzysztof Kieslowski Award in Denver.

“We have been successful in North America and are slowly but surely placing ourselves on the map there,” Rúnar said.

The director was unwilling to comment on the interest of Nicholson’s team in his film, other than saying that the lead in Volcano is a good part for an actor in his seventies and such roles are rare.

Volcano is Iceland’s contribution to the foreign language film category at the upcoming Academy Awards.
