There has been no transportation to Vestmannaeyjar islands today, neither by air nor boat, RÚV reports. The islands are off the south coast of Iceland.
Because of high winds, Eagle Air has not yet flown to Vestmannaeyjar today, but plans to fly there at 3:45 this afternoon.
Ferry rides are not an option, because Herjólfur, the Vestmannaeyjar ferry, is on its way to Denmark for repair, and the ferry Baldur from Stykkishólmur, which replaces Herjólfur, is not certified to bring passengers to harbor in Þorlákshöfn, South Iceland, which is where Herjólfur normally sails when the waves in Landeyjahöfn harbor are too high for a ferry to land. At noon, the waves in Landeyjahöfn were as high as 2.7 m (almost 9 ft).
“The two vessels are certified for different waters,” stated Ólafur William Hand, public relations officer for Eimskip, which operates Helrjólfur. Baldur, he said, is not certified to transport passengers from Vestmannaeyjar to Þorlákshöfn.
“We hope conditions will improve later in the day when the storm has passed,” Ólafur remarked.
