Landsbankinn is going to close the only ATM in the island of Hrísey, population 172, RÚV reports. The island is located in the middle of Eyjafjörður fjord, North Iceland.
There is no bank on the island, so the islanders now must travel to the motherland, Iceland, to obtain cash.
The city council of Akureyri―the municipality to which the island belongs―issued a statement yesterday, protesting the closure, claiming it will negatively affect the local population, and the tourists visiting the island.
A statement from the bank describes the ATM as outdated and old and having been used very seldom lately.
