The town council of Ísafjördur, the capital of the West Fjords, agreed at a meeting yesterday to challenge the Ministry of Transport to make improvements to the local airport so that it can be used as an international airport.
According to information from air traffic management company Flugstodir (ISAVIA), such improvements, including erecting a fence and establishing facilities for weapon search, would cost ISK 39 million (USD 622,000, EUR 421,000) and the annual operation of the airport would cost ISK 9 million (USD 144,000, EUR 97,000), ruv.is reports.
Ísafjördur town council already had a telephone meeting with Minister of Transport Kristján Möller about this idea last November. The minister said other airports in Iceland are waiting for similar improvements and that he couldn’t give the town council an answer yet.
