ÍR Triumphs over KR, Iceland’s Basketball Champion

Reykjavík basketball teams ÍR and KR met for an exciting game in the DHL Sports Hall yesterday, KR’s home turf. ÍR was the stronger team and beat KR 93-74, becoming the first team in eight years to knock the current champion out of the finals.

“It was a great night for ÍR. We gave everything and reaped the benefits accordingly,” point guard for ÍR Nate Brown, who is originally from Boston, told Fréttabladid. “I have only one thing to say to KR: I told you so.”

In 2006 and 2007, KR knocked ÍR out of the eight-team finals in the DHL Sports Hall.

Power forward Hreggvidur Magnússon was the best man of the game, scoring 29 points and 11 out of his 16 shots were a hit. “All the other teams should be scared. We are playing our best basketball ever and have a really strong team.”

KR’s coach Benedikt Gudmundsson was disappointed with the results. “I completely failed at motivating the team for the game and I’m disappointed both with myself and the players.”

“ÍR can go as far as they want to and if they continue to play like they did today they can go all the way,” Gudmundsson added.

ÍR will play against Keflavík next.
