Impregilo has asked the police to investigate the newspaper DV for a series of articles appearing in the daily paper that were critical of the Italian construction company.
Impregilo holds the contract to build the dam at Kárahnjúkar, in the East Fjords.
Calls for an investigation of the newspaper came after DV reported that employees were forced to bribe a manager at Impregilo with money and alcohol in order to be assigned more working hours at a higher wage.
The Icelandic media has published untrue statements about our company and its employees. Up until now we haven’t taken action, but we can no longer accept these rumours, a spokesperson for Impregilo stated.
Impregilo has been accused of paying foreign workers less than their Icelandic counterparts, and withholding pay, as well as medical benefits from foreign employees.
Based on these charges, the Icelandic government recently denied permits to a group of Chinese emigrants who had arrived in Iceland to work for Impregilio.
