Interrogations of the two men suspected in the death of Birna Brjánsdóttir will resume today. The 20-year-old Birna went missing in Reykjavík January 14. Her body was discovered eight days later on the south coast of Reykjanes peninsula, Southwest Iceland. The two suspects are crew members of the trawler Polar Nanoq from Greenland.
Chief Superintendent Grímur Grímsson told RÚV that a final conclusion from the autopsy report of a forensic pathologist is still being awaited, as are the results of biological tests of items confiscated onboard Polar Nanoq. Those could be ready in the next few days.
The police believe they know how Birna was killed, but Grímur has not been willing to reveal whether a weapon was used. He stated that some loose ends remain, but not many. Much work has been done in the case, and the police believe the big picture has gotten clearer regarding what happened.
No decision has been made as to whether an extension of the suspects’ police custody, which expires Thursday, will be requested. The police originally requested four weeks of custody, but the courts only granted two weeks.
