Internet Addiction among Teenage Boys

A large percentage of teenage boys who are receiving mental health treatment at Landspítali, the national hospital, show severe symptoms of internet addiction.

In an interview with Fréttablaðið, Guðlaug María Júlíusdóttir, head of the hospital’s women’s and children’s services, says that in the most critical cases, the children need to be hospitalized.

Boys between 14 and 18 seem to be more prone to internet addiction than girls of the same age. After weeks in their room, in isolation, spending hour after hour in front of the computer, they struggle with depression and suicidal tendencies.

Guðlaug María encourages parents to be alert and intervene early if their children show signs of withdrawing from family and friends.
