International Hotel Chains Keen on Iceland Project

A few international hotel chains have expressed interest in operating a luxury hotel by the Reykjavík harbor next to Harpa, the Icelandic National Concert and Conference Center, which is currently under construction.

However, the size of the hotel will not be the same as originally assumed. “I expect the building will be smaller than planned. The plan was to have a hotel with 390 rooms and 100 apartments. Now there will be no apartments and […] 250 to 350 rooms,” Pétur J. Eiríksson, chairman of the board of Situs, which is connected with the planned hotel’s real estate and operating company, told Morgunbladid.

The hotel will probably still be six stories high but the base might shrink. “It is our goal to open this hotel in 2013, but then all our plans on cooperation with a hotel chain and investors must work out,” Eiríksson said.

Usually an investor is responsible for constructing the building and leasing it to a hotel chain. The project is currently being introduced to hotel chains and then the next step is to find an investor to finance it, Eiríksson explained.
