Hat tournaments are tournaments in ultimate, a team sport played with a flying disk (or frisbee), where players join individually rather than as a team.
As the name suggests, teams are formed by randomly pulling names of the participants from a hat. Teams for the Iceland tournament will be drawn on December 29.
The object of the game is to score points by passing the disc to a player in the opposing end zone, similar to the end zone in American football or the in-goal area in rugby, according to Wikipedia.
According to the rules of the game, players are not allowed to run, but may pivot, while holding the disk. In 2008, there were reportedly 4.9 million ultimate players in the United States.
More information about the tournament is available on the competition’s official website and Facebook page.
