International Departures from Keflavík Airport Still On the Increase

The number of foreign passengers departing from Keflavík airport increased nearly 8% in January, RÚV reports. This comes out to almost 11,500 more foreign passengers during the same time period last year, although this is a significantly lower increase than the airport saw between 2016 and 2017. Nevertheless, almost 40,000 Icelanders went abroad in January this year and as of the end of January, and the number of international flights departing from Keflavík airport has increased just under 5%.

British and American passengers account for almost half of the total departures. British travelers accounted for the highest number of arrivals to the airport. Americans, meanwhile, account for the highest increase in departures. Next were Chinese and German travelers, who together, account for almost an eighth of the total departures last month.

The number of foreign traveler departures from Keflavík airport has more than tripled since 2014. The total number of Americans visiting the country has increased nearly five-fold, while the number of British travelers—who seem to prefer traveling to Iceland during the winter—has doubled. During the same time period, the number of Central and Southern Europeans traveling to Iceland has more than tripled and the number of Nordic travelers departing from the country has increased by a quarter.
