Injured Bird Cliff Climber Out of ICU

Einar Valur Kristjánsson, the man who suffered serious injuries when his rope snapped and he fell down a bird cliff during egg collecting in the remote Hornstrandir region in the West Fjords on Sunday, has been discharged from the ICU.

Einar’s condition is good considering the circumstances—he broke his pelvis in the fall—and he and his family would like to express their gratitude to everyone who assisted with his rescue in difficult and demanding circumstances, Morgunblaðið reports.

“Moments like these show once again the importance of having trained search and rescue squads around the country,” said Guðmundur A. Kristjánsson, Einar’s relative, in a statement.

After six to eight meters in free fall, Einar landed on a ledge. People who were on a boat nearby came to his assistance and his friends called for search and rescue. An emergency vessel arrived, and afterwards a Coast Guard helicopter, which brought Einar to hospital in Reykjavík.
