Daníel Ernir Jóhannsson, the nearly seven month old baby who survived the fatal car crash that killed his parents in Mugla, Turkey on Wednesday, was reunited with his family on Thursday evening. They have now returned to Iceland.
Gunnar Tryggvason, Daníel’s uncle, told Fréttabladid it was obvious that he had been given the best possible care after the accident.
His parents, Jóhann Árnason and Dagbjört Thóra Tryggvadóttir, both died when their car hit a van driving in the opposite direction.
Daníel, who was unharmed, was first taken to the hospital in Mugla but later the Consul to Iceland in Turkey, Esat Kardicali, and his wife took over his care.
At the hospital the nurse Sevda Köse, who has a baby of her own, breastfed Daníel because he couldn’t handle the powdered milk they gave him initially. She said she will always remember him with warmth.
Tryggvason, who traveled to Turkey with his wife and Árnason’s parents, said he would like to thank the hospital staff and the Kardicali family. He added Daníel’s future is bright after all; he has a large, loving family.
The accident and Daníel’s survival raised significant media attention in Turkey where he was called “the miracle baby”.
