An agreement between the Icelandic state, Norðurþing and the Harbor Fund of Norðurþing on various actions to develop employment in the region was also signed at the occasion, Fréttablaðið reports.

Minister of Industries and Innovation Steingrímur J. Sigfússon signed the declaration on behalf of the state. He will also submit two bills at Alþingi, the Icelandic parliament, on related subjects before the current term ends.

One of the bills assumes that the minister be granted authority to make an investment agreement on the construction of a silicon factory at Bakki.

The other is to obtain authority for the state to finance the development of infrastructure, a necessary prerequisite for the project, including a road connection between the harbor in Húsavík and the Bakki industrial area, as well as an enlargement of the harbor.
