Independent Party MP Critical of Party’s EU Policy

MP for the Independence Party Ragnheiður Ríkharðsdóttir criticized her own government for not following the will of Alþingi, the Icelandic parliament, in regard to Iceland’s application for European Union membership and calling for a referendum on continued talks.

“This matter is becoming rather embarrassing. In my mind it is absolutely clear that when Alþingi concludes in a parliamentary resolution on assigning something to the government, a single minister or the government in its entirety, the legislative has allocated a certain project to the executive and the executive is in fact acting in the legislation’s authority,” Ragnheiður reasoned in an interview on radio program Sprengjusandur on Bylgjan on Sunday morning, Fréttablaðið reports.

Ragnheiður stated no government can decide not to follow the will of Alþingi. “The parliamentary resolution is ready, approved and passed by the legislative assembly. If that resolution is to be revoked, it is for Alþingi to do so.”
