Independence Party Members Found EU Movement

Some Independence Party members have founded a pro-EU movement to provoke positive discussions about the European Union within the party—its leadership was against applying for EU membership. The movement’s inaugural meeting will be held in the Culture House tomorrow.

The movement’s founders include mathematician and publisher Benedikt Jóhannesson, economist Jónas Haralz, former Prime Minister Thorsteinn Pálsson and MP Ragnheidur Ríkhardsdóttir, reports.

Jóhannesson said he wouldn’t comment on whether other MPs from the Independence Party were involved in the movement but he said both the party’s chairman Bjarni Benediktsson and vice-chair Thorgerdur Katrín Gunnarsdóttir were aware of it.
