Independence Party Largest in New Election Poll

A new poll by Fréttablaðið and shows the Independence Party as the favourite in the upcoming municipal elections in Reykjavík, with 30 percent support. The Social Democratic Alliance follows closely with 25 percent.

As many as seven parties could be voted into the 23 seats of the city council, according to the poll. The third largest party in the poll is the Pirate Party, with 11 percent support. The Left-Green Movement and Centre Party measured with just under eight percent each, while the Reform Party measured just over seven percent support. The Progressive Party trails with 3.6 percent support.

The Social Democratic Alliance, Left-Green Movement, and Pirate Party currently hold a majority in Reykjavík’s municipal government. Were the poll’s numbers reflected in the upcoming election, the three parties would only receive 11 seats out of 23, meaning they would need a fourth party to form a majority. The Independence Party would receive eight seats according to the poll.

Interestingly, only 50.8 percent of those contacted to take part in the poll took a stance. A total of 11.6 percent of respondents stated they would refrain from voting or submit an empty ballot, while 16.6 percent said they were undecided and 21.3 did not wish to answer the questions.

Municipal elections will take place around Iceland on May 26th.
