An MMR poll conducted January 12-20 reveals that 53.2 percent of Icelanders support government- funded grants for artists in the form of salary paid to those whose applications are accepted. Of the respondents, 46.8 percent said they were against them. Support for government-funded grants has increased by 7 percent since February of 2013 and by 14 percent since March 2010.
Those who are under the age of 30 (62 percent) and those living in the capital region (56 percent) are likelier than others to support the grants, as are households with a monthly income in excess of ISK 1 million (UDS 7,600, EUR 7,000) (64.7 percent).
When support for government-funded grants is broken down by political alliances, it is the strongest among those who would vote for the Social Democratic Alliance (80.3 percent) and the Left-Green Movement (79.2 percent). Those who would vote for the Progressive Party are the least likely to support government-funded grants for artists (23.2 percent), followed by voters of the Independence Party (31.8 percent).
The number of respondents was 922, all of them 18 years and older.
