Increase in New Year’s SMS Greetings

By Iceland Review

The increase in SMS messages at telecom company Síminn between December 31, 2006, and December 31, 2007, was 30 percent; 830,000 messages, many presumably containing New Year’s greetings, were texted on Monday.

Considering that Iceland’s population only counts little over 300,000 people, that number is quite impressive. According to Síminn, the SMS traffic increased steadily throughout the day and peaked around midnight, Fréttabladid reports.

Fréttabladid predicts that seasonal greetings in form of text messages will continue to increase in popularity and may at some point replace traditional Christmas and New Year’s greeting cards.
