Increase in Foreign Visitors to Iceland at Christmas

Iceland saw a 20 percent increase from 2007 in the number of foreign tourists who stayed at hotels and pensions in Reykjavík this Christmas, according to information from the Icelandic Travel Industry Association (SAF).

Approximately, 1,200 people booked accommodation in Reykjavík on Christmas Eve and 3,300 people on New Year’s Eve, which is a slight decrease from 2007, as stated in an earlier report.

A number of tourists also visited Reykjavík between December 24 and 31, although they may not have booked rooms on these exact dates.

The foreign visitors come from many different countries, according to SAF, but the most prominent groups come from the UK, the Nordic countries, Germany, the United States, Russia and Japan.
