An assessment of Icelandic football stadiums has revealed that many changes need to be made in order to improve accessibility for people with disabilities, Vísir reports. The project, “Everyone at the Stadium,” stemmed out of university students Alexander Harðarson and Ólafur Davíðsson’s Bachelor’s thesis at the University of Iceland and involved the pair visiting each of the highest division men and women’s football fields and reviewing them against a checklist of factors.
“According to these latest findings, there are various things that need to be changed and improved. There aren’t any designated places for wheelchair seating anywhere in the stadiums and the sight lines are often lacking. Fans with disabilities have to miss a lot of important plays in the game if the sight lines aren’t okay,” said Alexander. He says that poor viewing facilities can keep fans with disabilities from returning to the stadium and supporting their team with other fans.
“There need to be regulations on improving accessibility because football is a sport that everyone should have equal access to.”
