Icesave State Guarantee Bill not Certain to be Passed

The bill regarding the state’s guarantee of Icesave accounts has now been passed by of the Left-Green Movement while the Social Democrats will do so tomorrow morning, pressan.is reports.

The government passed the bill, submitted by the Minister of Finance, Steingrímur J. Sigfússon, this morning. A detailed statement is expected tomorrow, recounting how the bill was passed.

Despite the insistence of Left-Green party leader Gudfrídur Lilja Grétarsdóttir that the bill be generally accepted within the party, she says that her personal vote it against the guarantee.

It is uncertain whether the Althingi parliament will reach a majority support for the bill, with the opposition already declaring its intent to vote the bill down. A few parliamentarians for the Left-Green Movement are also undecided as of yet.

The bill will most likely be released tomorrow in Althingi, and the Minister of Finance will present it on Thursday.
