Minister for Social Affairs Jóhanna Sigurdardóttir received on Monday last week the Children’s Culture Prize from the Children’s Welfare Fund for her contribution to families with children in Iceland in her time as minister and MP before that.
CEO of deCODE Genetics, Kári Stefánsson, who is also the fund’s chairman, granted the prize to Sigurdardóttir, a silver trophy designed by Dýrfinna Torfadóttir, Morgunbladid reports.
On the occasion, Stefánsson also presented grants to initiatives regarding children worth ISK 8 million (USD 54,000, EUR 53,000) in total.
The Icelandic Church Aid and the charity Maedrastyrksnefnd received ISK 2 million (USD 13,000, EUR 11,000) each, which will be used for purchasing clothing and Christmas present to distribute to needy families for the upcoming holiday season.
Since deCODE founded the Children’s Welfare Fund eight years ago, the fund has distributed more than ISK 450 million (USD 3.0 million, EUR 2.4 million) to various projects.
