Police departments across Iceland are getting new vehicles, complete with new colors and new logos, RÚV reports. The vehicles are being specially built in Sweden.
There are currently 150 police cars in service in Iceland, most of which have logos that date back to 2002. The Police Commissioner adopted new, simpler vehicle logos at the beginning of the year which look considerably different than the old ones—for instance, there is no longer a red stripe on either side of the star-shaped badge icon. Instead, the new police vehicles will be high visibility yellow and blue in color. These are the colors used on police vehicles in the other Nordic countries and most states in Europe, and are based on the ‘Battenburg markings’ that are used for emergency vehicles in many countries around the world.
The new vehicles are outfitted with computer-operated lights and radio and all have four-wheel drive and specially designed compartments for weapons in the trunks. There will also now be partitions between the front and back seats.
Two new police vans and motorcycles arrived in the capital area in early spring. Eight new Volvo V90 police cars are being distributed among the eight precincts in the capital area. Four of these are already in service and the remaining ones are set to arrive next week. All of the precincts in Iceland will have new vehicles prior to the summer.
