Icelandic Women Will Go to EURO 2017

The Icelandic women’s national football team has earned the right to participate in the UEFA Women’s EURO 2017, to be held in the Netherlands next summer, Fréttablaðið reports. That became clear after Portugal beat Finland 3-2 in a qualifying game yesterday.

This is the third time in a row that the Icelandic women’s team qualifies for participation in the European Championship.

The news, which came prior to last night’s game at Laugardalsvöllur arena, energized the team even more. They beat Slovenia 4-0 in their second to last qualifying game. They are now at the top of their group, having scored 33 goals and no goal scored against them after seven games.

Only two other teams have gone through the qualifiers without having a goal scored against them. They are Germany and France, who rank second and third after the US on FIFA’s World Ranking List.

Iceland’s final game in the qualifying round is against Scotland on Tuesday at 5 pm.
