Icelandic women continue their active participation in the #metoo movement, most recently in the fields of music, technology, and science. Women have united to speak out about the gender-based discrimination and violence they experience in their field and call for action.
Iceland Review has previously reported on women in politics and film and theatre joining together in closed Facebook groups to share experiences and support, as well as releasing public statements and accounts to media.
Icelandic women in the music industry released a statement yesterday signed by 333 individuals. RÚV reported first. The statement was accompanied by 25 anonymous accounts of gender-based discrimination, ranging from verbal comments to rape.
Women in the technology, information, and software industries have released a statement signed by about 300 women and 50 personal accounts of discrimination, while women in the science industry released a statement signed by 330 individuals and with 106 accounts of discrimination. The statements call for action on the part of those in power to eliminate gender-based discrimination and violence in the workplace.
