Icelandic Woman Still Detained in Plattsburgh

By Iceland Review

Linda Björk Magnúsdóttir, the 42-year-old Icelandic woman who was arrested in Plattsburgh, New York, one month ago is still in detention. Her case has yet to be handled by the courts.

Magnúsdóttir was charged for having entered the US illegally and for escaping from a police station after having been arrested for the first violation, reports.

An extensive search was launched after Magnúsdóttir escaped. Federal agents, city and state police forces participated in the search and a helicopter was also used.

Magnúsdóttir was given a lawyer last month. Her father, Magnús Thór Sigmundsson, told that according to his information, the court case can take between six months and two years.

Sigmundsson explained that his daughter had crossed the borders from Canada illegally to see her daughter who lives in the state of New York. He is critical of the American justice system.

“There doesn’t seem to be made a difference between real criminals and people who make silly mistakes,” Sigmundsson said. He has contacted the Icelandic Consulate in New York because of his daughter’s case.

“I’m a little surprised that there aren’t clearer connections between the US and Iceland regarding such cases. That there isn’t a person here, for example at the Ministry of Justice, who can call and say: ‘What kind of nonsense is this? Why don’t you send the woman back home?’” he commented.
