Icelandic weightlifter Fanney Hauksdóttir, from Seltjarnarnes peninsula in the capital area, is the new female youth world champion in bench press, after winning at the World Championship in Denmark with a big margin, visir.is reports.
Fanney broke the Icelandic record (both in the youth and adult categories) after lifting 135 kilograms. She had attempted to set a new world record, lifting 145.5 kg, but was unsuccessful.
Tatiana Gabidulian from Russia came second after lifting 120 kilograms, 15 kilograms less than Fanney.
Fanney was one of two Icelanders competing at the championships. She told Fréttablaðið yesterday that she was already looking forward to next year’s competition, her last in the youth category.
