Dohop.com this week won a World Travel Award in the category of World’s Leading Flight Comparison Website. Dohop is a global brand, but is headquartered in Reykjavík, Iceland.
Branded “the travel industry’s Oscars,” the World Travel Awards are a big deal in the sector and the World’s Leading Flight Comparison Website award is based on votes from the public and the travel industry.
Dohop.com’s competitors in the shortlist for the award were: Skyscanner.net, Cheapflights.com, Fly.com, Kayak.com, FareCompare.com, RouteHappy.com, Adioso.com, Hipmunk.com and Momondo.com. Kayak.com won the award in 2013.
Dohop started life in 2006 as the world’s first budget airline booking aggregation website. It has since grown to include all scheduled airlines; though it refers users to the airlines’ own ticketing sites and does not sell directly—it just finds the cheapest options.
Dohop’s income comes from pay per click advertising and from selling specialized search engines to airlines and airports. The company also operates an analytics department offering route network analysis and optimization suggestions to airlines and airports (according to Wikipedia).
