Icelandic Volcano in the World News

Photo: GFJ

It has been a long time since Iceland was in the world news so much. The main newspapers in almost every country have the volcano and its terrible ash on the front page. The last time this happened might have been the Reagan-Gorbachev summit in 1986. Before that, the eruption in Heimaey in 1973 hit the front pages (which most people will have forgotten now, but 5.000 people lost their homes) and the chess world championship in 1972, between Fisher and Spassky.

Sigurdur Sigurdarson collected a lot of front pages on the eruption on his home page.

Our special offer for the Iceland Review magazine with eruption photos and coverage. Now you can also buy a unique book with Páll Stefánsson’s photographs of the eruption on Fimmvörduháls.
