Icelandic Team 23rd in FIFA Rankings

The Icelandic men’s national football team is now ranked 23rd best in the world by the highest governing body of international football, FIFA.

This is the highest ranking every achieved by the Icelandic team.

Up from 37th in June, Iceland now sits above every other Nordic country on the list, as well as the United States, Ukraine, Ghana and Russia.

What lies behind the 14 seat jump is Iceland’s victory against the Czech Republic last month.

That same win earned Iceland the top spot in its group for the Euro Cup 2016 qualifiers, guaranteeing the team a spot in the tournament, held next summer in France.

In preparation for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, UEFA has now sorted their member teams into seeding pots based on these most recent rankings.

Iceland has been placed in Pot 2, alongside Slovakia, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, France, Denmark and Bosnia Herzegovina.
