Hundreds of students marched from the University of Iceland (HÍ) to Austurvöllur in Reykjavík yesterday to remind the government of the importance of education.
Sigurdur Örn Hilmarsson, head of the Student Association in Iceland, said they were not protesting, but recommending that the government put more money into education. This is reported in all the main media.
Hilmarsson said education it is of great importance to the Icelandic society as the success of Icelandic companies, such as Marel, shows. Hilmarsson concluded that education is good investment for the government.
Therefore it is only right, Hilmarsson reasoned, that universities in Iceland get as much support as universities in neighboring countries.
In the coming days he and fellow students will meet with politicians to make sure they are going to put education on their agenda in the coming election.
