A three-layer stamp depicting Yoko Ono’s Imagine Peace Tower and John Lennon, issued by the Iceland Post Company in October 2008, was named the third Most Extraordinary Stamp of 2008 by StampNews, an international stamp collectors’ website.
The stamp, designed by Örn Smári Gíslason, is printed in a traditional four-color offset format and then overprinted with phosphorus in silk screen which causes the picture to accumulate light and then glow in the dark. When exposed to ultraviolet light, a picture of John Lennon appears on the stamp.
The stamps that StampNews ranked first and second were both Austrian. The winning stamp is an embroidered flower and the runner-up a football made from the same material as the footballs used in the 2008 UEFA European Championship held in Austria and Switzerland last year, mbl.is reports.
The Iceland Post Company has also published a book on the Imagine Peace Tower.
