Icelandic short film a hit in Melbourne

The short film Wrestling was given an award for the best short film at the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) in Australia last weekend, thus qualifying it for participation in the selection for Best Short Film at the 2008 Oscars.

“This is very exciting,” the film’s director Grímur Hákonarson told Fréttabladid. “This is a very good start that the film has already made it to the preliminary selection for the Oscars.”

The film features two farmers in the remote Icelandic countryside portrayed by Halldór Gylfason and Björn Ingi Hilmarsson, who have a secret romantic relationship they nurture by practicing traditional Icelandic wrestling.

Wrestling will soon be screened at the Sarajevo Film Festival in Bosnia and Herzegovina and was screened at the Film Festival in Locarno, Switzerland, last week.
