Icelandic Search and Rescue Given Society Award

President of Iceland Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson presented the Landsbjörg search and rescue association (ICE-SAR) with daily newspaper Fréttabladid’s annual society award and a prize of ISK 1 million (USD 7,900, EUR 5,700) at a ceremony in the Culture House yesterday.

Historian and teacher Jón Bödvarsson received this year’s honorary award and André Bachmann was named the Everyday Hero 2010 for launching an annual Christmas celebration for people with disabilities, Fréttabladid reports.

Gauraflokkurinn, which organizes summer vacations and outdoor recreation for boys with ADHD, was also awarded, as well as the campaign group Hugarafl, which fights prejudice against those who suffer from mental illnesses.

The previous day newspaper DV presented Reykjavík Art Museum – Hafnarhús with its annual culture award for the D exhibition series.
